KEEP THE HEAT ON FLEAS THIS AUTUMN

Fleas cannot fly but they sure can jump. These blood sucking insects cause irritating itching, hair loss and allergies. Autumn, with its cooler daily temperatures, is a season that both favours long term flea survival and development whilst still supporting high flea challenge activity. It is therefore a key time to consider flea control, and be ready to deal with them when they jump onto your pet.
It is true, the adult fleas seen on pets are just the tip of the flea population iceberg, making up 5% of the problem. The remaining 95% (eggs, larvae and pupae) live inside the home, or outside hidden in nooks and crannies, including leafy gardens and park areas. Inside the home, fleas can successfully develop all year round. Outside, high summer temperatures plus lower humidity can quickly kill unprotected flea stages. But in Autumn, with moderate temperatures and humidity, the life cycle can regain momentum. Eggs laid by fleas living on untreated pets fall into the environment where they can quickly develop into larvae, pupae, and finally into the adult fleas that re-infest our pets. During the Autumn months, this life cycle can be completed in as few as 14 days, both inside the home and outside in the garden or park. It is also important to remembers that pupae can survive for up to six months over winter, and then emerge when warmth and humidity increase again in the Spring. Thus, flea populations that may cause concerns later in the year can arise from treatment lapses during the Autumn months.
Breaking the flea life cycle - it’s all about your pet
It is not complicated, but there are several factors that can make or break a flea control program. Firstly, use FRONTLINE PLUS® for flea control every month, all year round. FRONTLINE PLUS is the only spot on that breaks the flea life cycle at every stage to protect your pet, and your home as well.
Also: • Treat all dogs and cats in your household for fleas every month, all year round. • Vacuum your home regularly to help remove eggs and stimulate fleas to emerge [don’t forget to focus on where pets spend most of their time e.g.: the sofa!]. • Regularly wash pet bedding in hot water (>60°C for 10 minutes). • Avoid letting untreated pets into your home – viable eggs can fall off inside the home. • Don’t allow pets access to under the house - it’s often a highly infested area.
