Zoos Victoria - Fighting Extinction

Zoos Victoria + PETstock Assist

PETstock and PETstock Assist are excited to hold a long-term partnership with our friends at Zoos Victoria!

Welcoming a new Animal Welfare Officer

Together, we will improve the welfare of animals in Zoos Victoria’s care by funding a new Animal Welfare Officer. The Officer’s role will contribute to progressing Zoos Victoria’s activities in animal welfare sciences, particularly those related to the improvement of the welfare of animals in their care. This work includes development of enrichment activities to enhance environments and stimulate behaviour, and a variety of research and other tasks within Zoo’s Victoria’s Wildlife Conservation and Science team.

We’re so proud to help make this position possible!

See below link to learn about some of the great research Zoos Victoria are undertaking!

Help save the Mountain Pygmy-possum from extinction!

The critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum (Burramys parvus) is Australia’s only hibernating marsupial, spending up to seven months in hibernation in the alpine and sub-alpine boulder fields of Victoria.

This tiny possum is facing big challenges, with climate change, the loss of habitat, and predators (mainly feral cats and foxes), all posing severe threats. More recently, the huge reduction in Bogong Moth numbers – likely due to recent droughts in areas where the moths breed – is a major concern as the possum's primary food source dwindles.

PETstock and PETstock Assist’s partnership with Zoos Victoria helps in the fight against animal extinction – including saving the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum.

3 ways you can help save the Mountain Pygmy-possum...

1. Turn the lights off to attract the Bogong Moths

If you live in the ACT, NSW or Victoria, we encourage you to turn off unnecessary lights overnight during September and October. By turning off these lights, you will help the Bogong Moths fly their natural path toward the Mountain Pygmy-possums.

It’s also vital that Parliament House, in Canberra, follows suit. Plus, public buildings and stadiums across ACT, NSW and Victoria.

2. Help track moth sightings – with the Zoos Victoria Moth Tracker

To help track the migration of Bogong Moths from the alpine regions to Mountain Pygmy-possum territory, we encourage you to record your sightings on the Zoos Victoria Moth Tracker.

3. Buy a tote for a tree – with the Totes for Wildlife program

During this critical time for the Mountain Pygmy-possums, they need more food sources. We’re helping Zoos Victoria sell tote bags to plant trees and shrubs – attracting inset food sources to Mountain Pygmy-possums. Every tote bag sold, plants a tree.

Buy a tote bag at your local Victorian PETstock store, or purchase with Zoos Victoria online or at the zoo.
