Dogs for First Responders (D14R) provides vital mental health support to police, firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency personnel through therapy dog visits led by experienced former first responders.
Their mobile K9 teams visit stations, hospitals and wellness hubs to break down barriers around seeking help, offering connection and relief to those struggling with PTSD, burnout and suicide risk.
Since launching in 2023, their growing team of K9 handlers across Perth has created safe spaces where first responders can let their guard down and access support before crisis hits.
PTSD Dogs Australia rescues unwanted dogs and transforms them into life-changing assistance dogs for Veterans and First Responders battling PTSD.
These specially trained companions help their handlers carry out essential daily tasks, restore independence, and reclaim quality of life after service-related trauma. By giving second chances to both dogs and people, PTSD Dogs reduces the typical two-year wait for assistance dogs to under 12 months – delivering hope when it's needed most.
Through their Animal Assisted Smiles Program, therapy dog teams also visit police, fire, and paramedic stations across the country, providing stress relief and connection to those still on the front lines.
When first responders and veterans receive the support they need, lives change.
"In September 2025, Rockingham Hospital lost a beloved second-generation ED nurse to suicide. Her passing affected multiple generations of hospital staff and the paramedic crews who responded. D14R's therapy dog teams created a safe space for frontline workers to grieve without judgment. The therapy dog team handlers – experienced first responders themselves – were able to understand their struggles and offered comfort simply by being present."

"A retired Army Veteran's chronic anger, anxiety and startle response led to social exclusion from local shops and community spaces. Daily life had become isolating and overwhelming. But when Henry, his PTSD Assistance Dog, came along – everything changed. Trained to calm anger outbursts, create a protective space, and assist with mobility, Henry helped his Handler re-enter places that had once felt impossible to navigate. Today, Team Henry moves comfortably through their community, looked out for by their local shops and cafes."
