Choose cat litter by material, texture and cleanup

Start with a litter your cat is comfortable using. When comparing alternatives, separate what it is made from from how it behaves when wet, then check the individual product's directions.

Material and clumping are different choices

Clumping cat litter forms clumps that can be lifted out of the tray. Non-clumping formulas absorb moisture without forming those clumps, so follow their own removal and replacement instructions. Clumping is not limited to clay: the product pages describe both Squat Club Fast Clumping Clay and soybean-based Kit Cat Tofu Soya Original as clumping examples.

These are some material examples to compare:

  • Clay litter: check whether the particular formula clumps, then compare its grain texture, fragrance and dust information.
  • Paper litter: compare pellet texture and cleaning directions. For a specific material example, Breeders Choice Recycled Paper Cat Litter is made from 99% recycled paper.
  • Pine litter: Catmate Wood Pellet lists pine waste sawdust. Oreco Ecocat is another pine-pellet example. Larger pellets feel different from fine granules; check which texture your cat accepts rather than assuming one is best.
  • Plant-based litter: read the full ingredient list and check whether that formula clumps. Catmate Natural Tofu, for example, lists soybean pea fibre, corn starch and calcium carbonate among its ingredients. A tofu name does not mean the product contains only soy.

Narrow your shortlist

Compare texture, whether fragrance is added, declared dust features and the cleanup routine. Avoid assuming that every product made from the same material performs identically. For more background, read our guide to choosing cat litter.

Common questions

How should I introduce a different litter?

Keep the familiar option available and make changes gradually, watching what your cat uses comfortably. A sudden change in toileting habits should be discussed with your vet rather than assumed to be a litter preference.

What if I am buying for a kitten or a cat recovering from surgery?

Check the product's suitability information. For a kitten or a cat with medical needs, ask your veterinary team about the appropriate product; after surgery, follow their procedure-specific discharge instructions.

Can I flush or compost cat litter?

Follow the specific product's disposal instructions and your local council's waste rules. Do not infer flushability, compostability or accepted bin disposal from a material name or a general environmental claim.
