Owning fish comes with a few common misconceptions.
‘It’s complicated!’ ‘It’s expensive.’ ‘It’s time-consuming!’
While it does take some planning, the right setup can mean the difference between a hassle and a thriving aquarium. With Petstock’s advice and Aqua One’s Horizon View Starter Kits, getting started (or upgrading) is easy.
Whether you're a first-time fish keeper or a seasoned pro, there’s a setup to suit your needs.
Step 1: Choose your size
How do you choose the perfect tank for your fish? Well, it all comes down to space, size – and the right setup.
Determine the space and location in your home
You’ll need a nice, open area in your home that has natural light – but is not in direct sunlight as this will raise the temperature of your tank and promote algae growth.
Place it in a room that you use regularly so you can easily view and enjoy it! Ensure there’s enough space around the aquarium for proper ventilation and easy access to make filtration, lighting and water changes regularly.
Keep in mind that tanks can be heavy, especially when filled with water. A sturdy, level surface is crucial to support the weight safely.
Consider the number of fish
When it comes to fish tanks, bigger is often better.
Fish need ample space to grow, swim and stay active. An overcrowded tank can lead to a whole host of issues for your fish, from poorer water quality to stunted growth to higher stress levels.
A larger water volume also helps maintain stable conditions, as fish waste is diluted more effectively, reducing the risk of harmful ammonia and nitrate buildup.
Find the perfect fit
The Aqua One Horizon View tanks are stylish, easy to set up and include everything you need for freshwater, cold water and tropical fish.
Available in 65-litre, 130-litre and 182-litre sizes, these tanks cater to both beginners and experienced fish keepers.
Plus, each tank comes with a sleek, matching stand – exclusive to the Petstock range – that provides ample storage for accessories, keeping everything neat and organised.
Step 2: Accessorise for a healthy tank
Setting up an aquarium is easy when you have the right tools from the start.
Don’t want to stress about the details? With Aqua One Horizon View tanks, the biggest essentials are already taken care of, including:
Temperature control: The built-in glass heater with an adjustable thermostat keeps the water at the perfect temperature for your fish.
Effortless filtration: The slimline, internal filter takes up minimal space but has a mighty capacity to keep your tank clean and clear with mechanical, chemical and biological filtration.
LED lighting: The energy-efficient LED light unit highlights your fish’s colours and supports plant growth.
Smart storage: The sleek, matching black fish tank stand keeps all your aquarium essentials within reach.
Some other accessories we recommend purchasing for the best fishkeeping experience include:
- Gravel cleaner
- Test kits
- Thermometer
- Algae scrubber
Step 3: Add decor for aesthetics and enrichment
Fish tank plants and decorations do more than enhance your setup aesthetically. They help create a safe, comfortable and stimulating environment for your fish.
Hiding spots like caves, plants and driftwood reduce stress by giving fish a place to retreat, while open swimming areas keep them active and engaged. Different textures and structures also support natural behaviours like foraging and breeding.
The Aqua One Horizon View tanks provide a spacious foundation to design your ideal aquascape, allowing you to mix and match planters, rocks and ornaments.
For an extra level of customisation, each tank includes a reversible background (black or blue) to complement your setup while neatly concealing cables.
Step 4: Plan for easy maintenance
Regular maintenance is key to a thriving tank, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a hassle or time-consuming.
We recommend that you perform a water change every two weeks. During most water changes, you will only need to change out 25% of the water. You should also clean the gravel with a gravel vacuum and scrape some algae off the sides of the tank with an algae scraper.
Once a week, you should test the levels of the pH, ammonia and nitrite, nitrate and phosphate. This is because even small changes in the water quality can cause issues for your fish, so it’s important to stay on top of these changes.
The smart design of the Aqua One Horizon View tanks makes keeping a clean environment easier than ever.
They feature a slimline internal filter that helps maintain clear water with minimal intervention. It takes up very little room inside the tank but has a generous capacity for trapping waste – while still allowing beneficial bacteria to bloom.
And the sliding glass lids mean no more struggling with heavy panels – you can simply slide and clean.
