Petstock Foundation partners with Sustainable Salons to repurpose pet fur
The Petstock Foundation is giving pet fur waste a second life!
Through its partnership with Sustainable Salons, pet fur from grooming salons across AU and NZ is being repurposed into environmental resources.
Who are Sustainable Salons?
Sustainable Salons partners with hair and beauty salons, dermal clinics, barbers and pet groomers across Australia and New Zealand to give waste a second life. Materials like hair, metals, plastics, chemicals, paper and pet fur are collected and repurposed through practical and innovative initiatives.
By working with pet groomers, the program ensures that pet fur is also part of the impact journey, creating real outcomes for people, the planet, and the industry.
Plus, for every kilo of fur collected from our salons, Sustainable Salons will donate $1 to the Petstock Foundation.
Where pet fur ends up
Hair Booms
Hair clippings and pet fur are repurposed into hair booms, which are used to soak up oil spills on land and in waterways. Pet fur is particularly effective in this application, and just 1.2 kilograms of pet fur is enough to make one boom. Each boom can soak up to 4L of oil.
Hairy Soil
Collected hair is processed into a treatment called Soilz Alive. This product is used to enrich soil and stimulate plant growth, returning nutrients back to the earth in a sustainable way.
Hairy Bricks
Hair and pet fur are being trialled in construction materials. In the Hairy Brick project, 300 grams of hair or fur are added to each brick, reducing reliance on traditional materials and contributing to sustainable building practices.
This sustainability initiative supports the Petstock Group's commitment to People, Pets and the Planet and gives us the opportunity to make a meaningful, positive difference to the planet.
